U of M: Fuel economy in the U.S. ties record high

GasBuddy Blog -- According to a monthly report by the University of Michigan, the average fuel economy of newly purchased vehicles during the month of February 2013 has hit an all time high.

The average fuel-economy (window-sticker) value of new vehicles sold in the U.S. in February was 24.5 mpg. This ties the record high reached in January and is up 4.4 mpg from the value in October 2007 (the first month of our monitoring). For a description of the calculations and the recent mpg values, click here.

The University of Michigan Eco-Driving Index (EDI)--an index that estimates the average monthly emissions of greenhouse gases generated by an individual U.S. driver--stood at 0.80 in December. This value indicates an improvement of 20%...

Is that trustworthy info? Shouldn't there be an
independent review exposure of this data? First
question to be addressed in such independent review
is what are politics and leanings of U of M? Then
should be an independent study/examination of the
independent body checking into U of M! This all
because of doubt that anyone can be trusted! Then
should there be a 'greed' level test of all involved
to make sure this common disease isn't/won't
detrimentally impact the desired results.

And look -- everyone is fine! The higher federally required standards are working! A major breakthrough in technology would help, but still.

Better mpg is a combination of better technology and better driving habits. Neither one by itself is sufficient.

What they post on the car means nothing, what the average is after driving them, is what counts.

But we still have way to much reliance on foreign oil and giving money to countries that hate us.
We have to all push the powers that be to let other clean reliable technologies to be actually used in our country. Lets lead the world again and get back to our place in it.

I'm still not impressed with these numbers as I've owned vehicles that got better mileage than that, 20 odd years ago.

"The average fuel-economy (window-sticker)..."

If it's on the window sticker I don't believe it.
